He calls for bringing the elections forward and replacing Barak's government. . . The Hasmoneans abolish the Hellenic Legal Code, and the day is observed as a festival . . . At Chinon, France, the entire community of 160 Jews is burned in a pit on an island outside of town, on charges of poisoning wells to cause an epidemic, 1321 . . . Three Israelis and one American tourist are murdered when a suicide-terrorist blows up a No. 26 bus in Jerusalem, 1995 . . . Jacob Barsimson lands in New Amsterdam (New York) from Holland, becoming the first Jew to settle in North America, 1654 . . Opening of Sixth Zionist Congress in Basel, 1903. Herzl proposes using territory offered by Britain, specifically Uganda, as a temporary shelter for Jews fleeing Eastern Europe and Russia; the Russian delegates, after a riotous debate, walk out and refuse to return for the next congress unless the plan is stopped . . . 3. Health and Nutrition.
The prevalence of diabetes in adults, once thought to be primarily a disease of middle age or older, jumped nearly 70% among people in their 30s in the last decade, a report says. Overall, diabetes increased 33% from 1990 to 1998, U.S. health officials say as obesity among Americans increases and physical activity decreases. . .
